My Story

In February 2018, the Mudwalkers are taking on the Coast to Coast in New Zealand – a 243km multi-sport event that will see us cycling, trail running and white water paddling from one side of the country to the other in a test of our strength, endurance and sanity. Over the past months, we’ve been training hard, getting up early, staying up late, being generally single-minded and annoying to our families in order to prepare ourselves for this challenge.

But the challenge we are facing is of our own making, and we can choose to walk away at any time. The same can’t be said for those suffering with chronic disease. In 2016, one of the mini Mudwalkers, the son of our teammate John, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (TD1). This lifelong autoimmune disease destroys the ability to produce insulin, a hormone which is vital for life, and there is currently no cure, and no way to prevent T1D. With your help, we are hoping to change that.

As part of our epic crossing of NZ, we are raising funds to support JDRF Australia on its mission to accelerate life-changing breakthroughs to cure, treat and prevent type 1 diabetes and its complications. Please help me by spreading the word and sharing my page with your friends and family. Let’s turn Type One into Type None.

Team Mudwalkers

Blob

Team Mudwalkers has been together for over 7 years, regularly taking part in endurance and obstacle events. On Feb 10, we're taking on our greatest challenge, a 243 km run/cycle/kayak from the west coast to the east coast of the South Island, NZ known as the famous Coast to Coast. If you think that's tough, it's nothing compared to the challenges faced by people with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D).

T1D is a life-long autoimmune disease that affects over 120,000 people in Australia. John's 10 year old son Gabriel, is one of those people. Having T1D requires constant monitoring of blood glucose levels and insulin therapy. The cause of T1D is not known and there is currently no cure.

Well, we want to turn Type One into Type None. We are supporting JDRF Australia in its mission to find a cure for T1D. Your kind donation will contribute to research that will make a difference to the lives of those living with T1D. The more people that know about JDRF, the greater the impact, so please help us by spreading the word and sharing our page with your friends and family. Thank you.
