Last September I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. It was a massive shock to my family and friends where I found myself hearing "but you're fit and healthy!” or “you’re too young!" which then lead to "you can't eat this" or "you shouldn't be doing that!" and "you should try this because this person was cured"
Diabetes is widely misunderstood by many people and has a stigma of being related to bad lifestyle choices. Sadly still to this day there is no cure for Type 1 Diabetes and still don't know the cause. Diabetes effects around 1.7 Million Australians and from that number 500,000 people are undiagnosed.
This Disease becomes a big part of your life, Think every time you are hungry, you just go to the fridge or cupboard and grab something. If a diabetic wants something a check list comes to mind, how many carbs are in this meal? How much insulin will I be needing? What are my current BGL's, do I need to add more to cover current levels?
That doesn't even cover the highs and lows, or the daily injections!
My aim is to raise $1,000 to go towards finding a cure, also to show that Diabetes, whilst it is a life changer doesn't have to control you! To prove that this disease doesn't have to stop you from achieving your dreams, I have decided to run True Grits 24hr Enduro Race. That's 24 hours of mud, icy waters, lifting and climbing. My aim is reach/pass 10 laps of the course that is 100km.
My reason? To raise awareness to help others like me, who struggle with the day to day challenges that is Diabetes, the bits that are seen and unseen.
If you know someone who has or cares for someone with Diabetes, here's your chance to help! If you are able to, Donate now small or large and share this story as well as your own. Just reading what others with Type 1 have achieved helped give me the courage to do this!
Thanks and see you at the finish line!
